Abstract

1324668 Fuel injection valves PHYSICS INTERNATIONAL CO 21 April 1972 [21 April 1971] 18672/72 Heading F1B Hydraulic fuel valve assembly for controlling the amount of fuel supplied to an engine that includes a fuel line 14, comprises a fluidcontaining hydraulic cylinder 30, the piston 26 of which can be moved to pressurize the fluid therein, a two-part plunger having an upper part 17 which is acted on by the fluid-pressure in the cylinder 30 and a lower portion 19 carrying a valve member 18 which co-operates with a valve seat 20, a passageway 32 connects the supply line 14 to the valve seat and a further passageway 36 couples the supply line to the hydraulic cylinder to vary the pressure in the hydraulic cylinder in accordance with the fuel-pressure in the supply line. The upper part 17 of the plunger has faces 31 which are acted on by the fuel-pressure to produce a force which resists the downward movement of the plunger in a direction to open the valve. This downward movement is effected by moving the piston 26 downwardly e.g. by a Piezo-electric actuator 24, to increase the pressure in the cylinder 30, the fluid therein then acting on the upper end surface of the plunger 17. To equalize the initial pressures on the opposite end faces of the plunger 17, the passageway 36 allows fuel to flow into the cylinder 30, past a check-valve 38, if the pressure of fuel supplied to the valve assembly is suddenly increased. If the fuel-pressure drops rapidly, then the valve 18 may open momentarily due to the higher force acting on its upper end. Under normal working conditons, the distance by which the valve opens is determined by the engagement of the bottom surface 66 of a collar 58 on the stem with the uppermost surface of a shim 62. The plungers are guided by a housing 44 to which they are assembled together with a shim 62 of appropriate thickness before the housing is inserted in the body 40 of the valve assembly. In a modification the check-valve 38 is replaced by a bellows which is subject internally to the pressure of the fuel and expands or contracts in accordance therewith. This enables a fluid other than fuel to be used in the hydraulic cylinder. In a further modification the check-valve is replaced by a free piston which slides along a bore and is exposed at one end face to the fuel-pressure and at the other end face to the pressure in the hydraulic cylinder. The piston thus takes up a position in which equal forces act on its opposite ends.
