Abstract

1324836 Filtering or ion-exchange apparatus HYDRONAUTICS INC 27 April 1971 [13 July 1970] 11614/71 Headings BID and B1J One component is removed from a fluid stream by filtration or ion-exchange by contacting the stream with a continuously moving bed of filter material, the filter bed being caused to move by hydraulic pressure formed by flowing a stream of carrier liquid through the bed, the carrier liquid being withdrawn intermediate the ends of the bed. In Fig. 1, filter material is mixed with carrier liquid in vessel 20 and then passed via line 36 into an annular column 12, causing a bed 70 of filter material to move upwards through the column. The fluid stream to be filtered is introduced via line 72 collar 64 and screen 68. Filtered fluid and carrier liquid are removed into the core of the column via screen 32. Filter material is removed at the top of the column by scraper 76 and led away for disposal or regeneration. The component separated from the fluid may be solid or liquid. The method is suitable for the separation of oil-water mixtures using polyurethane or polystyrene foam beads as filter material, the beads being regenerated by heating, treating with solvent for the oil or compressing to squeeze out the oil. Other filter materials mentioned are felt stock, ceramic and metallic materials.
