Abstract

1331325 Semi-trailers TRAILER SYSTEMS Ltd 15 April 1971 9535/71 Headings B7T and B7J A semi-trailer is provided with a king pin 23 fixed in a block 24 and slidable between front and rear positions where it is clamped by pairs of jaws 27F, 28F and 27R, 28R respectively, each pair of jaws being pivotally mounted and biased to their open position by springs 38, 39. A locking member 33 is biased by spring 37 to engage the jaws and lock them around the king pin. When a tractor is coupled to the king pin located in the front jaws a lever 46 is then moved outwardly and which, via levers 45, 44, 43 and 40, withdraws the locking member causing the jaws to open. As the tractor is backed further under the trailer the king pin will slide backwards and be engaged by jaws 27R, 28R. A latch 47, 48 which retains the locking member withdrawn is tripped once the jaws have reached their fully open position so that the member then abuts the ends of the jaws remote from the recesses 31, 32. As the king pin is moved rearwardly, during the initial movement thereof the landing gear is stowed in its retracted position. A rod 52 attached to the block 24 is movable at its free end in a tube 53 provided with a rack 54 engaging a pinion on the landing gear shaft 14. Arms 56 pivotally mounted on tube 53 project through slots in the tube wall and are engaged by a flange 57 on the rod. As the rod is moved back so the tube also moves back rotating shaft 14 and retracting the landing gear. Once the arms 56 have passed rollers 59 they are caused by springs 58 to withdraw from the slots in the tube wall and the rod is then free to continue moving rearwardly through the tube. The landing gear is biased by a spring 19 to its retracted position, the spring acting on a slider 17 mounted in channel members 18 and attached to the legs 13 via a link 16. The gear is retained in its retracted position by a lock member 21 engaging a rod 22, and in its operative position by a latch 20 engaging the slide 17. Means are provided for retaining the landing gear retracted with the king pin locked in its front position.
