Abstract

1331760 Welding by pressure THERMATOOL CORP 8 Oct 1970 [23 Dec 1969] 47873/70 Heading B3R In welding two metal portions, the portions are advanced through a welding zone the portions being spaced apart upstream of the welding zone and being brought together thereat, high frequency current is caused to flow along paths in the portions to and from the welding zone, the portions which are heated by the current are enclosed in an imperfectly sealed cavity disposed wholly upstream of the welding zone and protective fluid is supplied to the cavity to escape as a jet towards the welding zone to envelop the weld zone in a controlled atmosphere comprising said protective fluid. A stainless steel strip 10, Fig. 1, 2 formed into open tubular shape is heated by high frequency current e.g. 200-500 KHz supplied to the strip edges by conductive blocks 19, 20 and is passed through rolls 12, 13 to bring the heated edges together at the welding zone 18. An outer ceramic shoe 28 with a wedge shaped end carrying nylon shims 31 is arranged between the rolls 12, 13 and has a bottom surface contoured to the shape of the tube against which it is resiliently urged. A recess 37 above the spaced apart strip edges is provided in the shoe 28 to which the tubes 38, 381 communicate. A mandrel 40 is disposed within the tube and carries on a pad 45 of elastomeric material an inner ceramic shoe 29 shaped to conform to the inner surface of the tube against which it is urged by the pad 45. The inner shoe has a recess 47 co-operating with recess 37 in the upper shoe to form a cavity. A gas such as argon, helium, a mixture of inert gases, one or more reducing gases, a welding flux in fluid, fluent powder or mist form is fed via the tube 38 into the cavity at 20-200 cu. ft. per hr. to escape into and around the apex of the V formed by the strip edges, a manometer being connected to tube 381. In a modification a single turn induction coil surrounds the tube and the conductive blocks are omitted. In producing a welded I beam a central web 63, Fig. 8, is moved longitudinally and top and bottom flanges 61, 62 are brought into engagement with the web by rolls 65. High frequency current is supplied to the web and flanges by contacts such as those shown at 67, 68. Ceramic shoes 72, 73, 85, 86 form cavities about the heated portions to which protective fluid is supplied by tubes 79, 89, the fluid escaping as jets into the apex of the V’s formed by the heated members. It is stated that similarly a fin may be welded to a tube or plate, plates or strips welded to form angle members and lap welds formed. Welds as described in Specification 1,314,705 may also be formed.
