Abstract
1331878 Cardiac apparatus AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 20 July 1971 [20 July 1970] 34014/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division H2] A medical electronic apparatus functioning with electrical physiological analogue inputs and outputs from and to a human being and having means for connection to an external electrical power source, is provided with means responsive to the loss of power from the source to cause operation of alarm means. The apparatus may be a cardiac response and stimulating apparatus. As shown, the apparatus 16 is connected by a rectifying unit 14 and a switch S1 to a power plug 10. When the switch S1 is closed and the apparatus 16 is being supplied with power, a relay coil 19 is energised and holds open contacts 22, 23 to disconnect an alarm 25. A switch S2 gauged to the switch Sl opens its contacts 40, 31 and a capacitor 27 is charged through a diode, 28. Should the supply fail, e.g. due to accidental withdrawal of the plug 10 from a socket, the relay releases, closing contacts 22, 23, so that the capacitor 27 can discharge through and operate the alarm 25. Opening the switch S1 does not cause the operation of the alarm, as the simultaneous closing of the switch S2 enables the capacitor 27 to discharge through a resistor 27. The alarm 25 may be an audio alarm and include an audio oscillator, alternatively the alarm may be visual. The alarm may be remotely situated and operated over a radio link. Other modifications include the use of a battery or inductor to energise the alarm and the use of a transistorised or semiconductor switch as the relay. (For Figure see next page)
