Abstract

1332386 Gas cooling apparatus; steam generators IDEMITSU PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd and ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA JUKOGYO KK 21 July 1971 [21 July 1970] 34279/71 Headings F4A and F4S [Also in Division B1] High temperature hydrocarbon gas is cooled and/or reacted in an apparatus consisting of concentric-tube elements 3, 7 with an annular space 12 between the tubes of each element, said elements extending through a casing 6, with the inner tubes 3 of the elements extending between chambers 1 and 4, and the annular spaces 12 of the elements extending between chambers 9 and 10 one (as shown) or both of which may incorporate expansion means 11. In use, the hot hydrocarbon gas flows through the tubes 3 via chambers 1 and 4, a cool fluid (e.g. water; which may become converted into high pressure steam) is passed through the casing 6, and an intermediate heat transfer liquid (e.g. molten lead, lead alloy, tin, tin alloy, bismuth, sodium or inorganic salts such as those of mercury or sodium) which need not be circulated, occupies the annular spaces 12 and the chambers 9 and 10. Resinous condensate and/or carbon deposited in the tubes 3 from the hydrocarbon gas is removed by temporarily replacing the intermediate liquid by a gas such as air, helium or carbon dioxide thus rasing the tube temperature sufficiently high for the burning-off of deposits. Burning-off is effected by passing an air stream through the hot tubes preferably after purging them of hydrocarbon gas by means of an inert gas. This method may also be used to remove deposits from catalysts in the tubes 3 when the apparatus is used as a tubular reactor.
