Abstract

1338678 Automatic control of speed GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 20747/71 Heading G3R In a digital control system for controlling the output of power from a 3-phase A.C. power source 1, Fig.1, to a D.C. motor 2, oppositely poled thyristors or SCR’s 3 (a-c) 4 (a-c) are selectively fired with a controlled phase delay and reversible preset counters (30) Fig.4 (not shown) in the firing circuits 5 (a-c) are repeatedly loaded at an appropriate point in each half cycle to a maximum positive or negative (two’s complement) setting according to signals from a phase detection logic unit 9. The firing circuits 5 (a-c) contain parallel digital comparators (60) Fig. 6 (not shown) which compare the signals from a digital error generator 7 with the registers of the counters (30) which are set to count up or down according to the phase detected, the comparators giving a signal to fire the relevant thyristor 3 (a-c), 4 (a-c). Signals from the error generator 7 are obtained by comparison of signals from a command generator 6 and a feed back device 8 driven from the controlled motor 2. The counting is performed by pulses from a clock generator 13 as described in Specification 1338677 but the control system differs from that described with reference to Fig. 1 of that application in that comparators (60) are used in the firing circuits 5 (a-c) and the reversible counters (30) Fig.4 (not shown) are continuously monitored in a parallel system particularly suited to digital servo systems operating under highly transient conditions. The system is otherwise similar to that described in the Specification 1338677 and includes inhibited NAND gates (61), (62), Fig.6 (not shown) which prevent any erratic firing of the thyristors, SCR’s etc. resulting from a noise signal when the preset numbers are loaded into the reversible counters (30).
