Abstract
1339140 Vehicle power units; transmissions W HOUSTON 11 April 1972 [11 Jan 1971] 1234/71 Heading B7H [Also in Divisions H2 and G3] A self-propelled vehicle comprises a combustion engine 2A driving an electrical generator 2B which charges a battery 2C, at least one of the wheels of the vehicle being driven by an electric motor 2D energized normally from the battery 2C, means being provided for stopping or starting the engine in dependence upon the voltage of the battery and the current required by the wheel motor(s) 2D. Devices 2K, 2L sense the current demand by the wheel motors 2D and the voltage of the battery 2C respectively to provide signals for a logic device 2M such that should these signals show that the battery is incapable of meeting the current demand the logic device 2M develops a signal which causes the engine 2A to be started whereupon the generator 2B functions to charge the battery and supply the wheel motors 2D. The engine 2A is started by using the generator 2B as a motor to rotate the engine. When the battery has been recharged sufficiently to supply the wheel motors by itself the logic device develops a signal which causes the engine to stop. The speeds of the wheel motors 2D are controlled by varying the width of energy pulses supplied to the motor by way of a transistor switching device in the motor controllers 2E. A sawtooth waveform is provided by a waveform generator 2G, the amplitude of which is selected by a device 2N to set the maximum speed of the wheel motors. The speed control signal to the controllers 2E is compared with a signal representing the speed of the motor, the resulting signal being used to control the transistor switching device so as to maintain constant the speed of the motors. Should the transistor switching device be turned off the wheel motors function as generators to charge the battery thereby providing the vehicle with regenerative braking. The vehicle direction is controlled by driving the motors on one side of the vehicle faster than those on the other side and this is arranged by a control device 2H operable by the vehicle steering mechanism which apportions the waveform from the generator 2G more to the driving motors on one side of the vehicle than to the motors on the other side. The motors are each provided with a switch whereby the motors are reversible.
