Abstract

1339175 Amylose films K HAYASHIBARA 19 Jan 1971 [26 Jan 1970] 2661/71 Heading B5B Amylose films are prepared by a process which comprises forming films by conventional methods from starch material containing a mixture of starch having an amylose content of greater than 50% by weight and a hydrolyzate obtained by the hydrolysis of a common starch with α-1,6, glucosidase. Preferably the starch is an amylomaize starch or amylose separated from common starch and the starch hydrolyzate comprises amylose having a degree of polymerization of less than 50 and is obtained by fractionation of the product of hydrolysis of a waxy starch. Examples 1-3 relate to the enzymatic treatment of amylomaize starch to produce hydrolyzates containing a high proportion of short chain amylose (D.P. less than 50) and in Examples 4-8 these hydrolyzates’are combined with amylomaize starch or commercial amylose and formed into films. The filmforming procedure comprises dissolving the starch mixture in an aqueous alkali solution containing NaOH, Na 2 SO 3 and glycerin, filtering, degassing, casting the resultant solution on to a glass plate and coagulating the cast film by immersion in an aqueous bath comtaining H 2 SO 4 and Na 2 SO 4 . After washing with water the films are plasticized by immersion in glycerin solutions and are then dried at 30‹ C.
