Abstract

1346444 Rotary positive – displacement compressors TRW Inc 21 June 1971 [22 June 1970] 29006/71 Heading F1F A refrigerant compressor 20 has a vaned rotor 47 engaging with a pressure-loaded sealmember 106 lodged in an axial groove 100 within a fixed cylinder 28 and extending between end caps 22, 24. The member 106 has grooves 120, 121 on its leading and radially outer faces giving high-pressure fluid access to its outer face. Pressure-relief bores controlled by a reed valvemember, Figs.4 and 5 (not shown), extend from the groove 100 to the outer surface of the cylinder. The radially inner face of the member 106 is inclined so as to prevent fouling of shoes 55 on the rotor vanes 53, which slide radially and are coupled in diametral pairs by pins 61 carrying springs 63. The grooves 121 may be inter-connected by grooves 125. Alternatively, the outer face of the member 106 is separated from the groove bottom by beads on said face, Figs.14 and 15 (not shown), the grooves 121 being omitted. Outlet-bores 62 are controlled by a reed valve-member, Fig.3 (not shown), and communicate with an outlet 78 by way of a port 71 and a porous annular demister 74. Liquid lubricant collected at the bottom of a space 73 is returned to a bearing 40 through ducts in the cylinder and cap 22, Fig.13 (not shown), by the outlet pressure. Bores 65 controlled by a reed valve-member allow liquid refrigerant and lubricant to escape when the compressor starts, the valve member being held down thereafter by the outlet pressure. An inlet opening 81 in the cap 22 communicates with an inlet 79 comprising a check valve, Fig.11 (not shown). The compressor may be mounted horizontally as shown in Fig.1 such that the aforesaid ducts communicate with the lowest part of the space 73 or with the rotor shaft 35 vertical and a housing 21 lowermost.
