1346708 Dip sticks: tape measures CHARLES JUI-CHENG HSU 30 Oct 1972 [4 Nov 1971] 49964/72 Heading G1H and G1M A gauge for detecting the presence of water at the bottom of an oil tank comprises a woven fabric porous graduated sleeve 11, Figs.1 and 2, cross stitched at 16 to provide pockets containing Sterculia lynchrophora Hance powder which soak up water but reject oil. Lead weights 19 and cork pieces 20 may be provided. In Figs.4-6 (not shown) shallow depths of water may be measured by shaping the sleeve as a horizontal foot weighted and divided into separate pockets by water soluble partitions (37), and if the quantity is small the water may be blotted up.
