Abstract

1346996 Developing photographic silver halide materials AGFA-GEVAERT 10 May 1971 [11 June 1970] 28403/70 Heading G2C [Also in Division C3] In a process for developing an exposed lightsensitive silver halide photographic material the development is carried out in the presence of a water-soluble compound obtained by reaction of a bisepoxide of the formula:- wherein: Z stands for oxygen or the group-O-Y-O- wherein Y is a straight or branched-chain alkylene group having from 2 to 8 C-atoms; with a monoalkyl or a monoaryl ether of ethylene glycol or of a polyoxyethylene glycol, the hydrogen atoms of the hydroxyl groups in the reaction product being optionally wholly or partly substituted. The water soluble compound may correspond to the formula:- wherein: Z has the same significance as in the first formula, R stands for alkyl or aryl, n stands for an integer from 1 to 20 and R 1 stands for hydrogen, an alkyl group, a substituted alkyl group, a -COR 2 group, a -CONHR 2 group or a -SO 2 R 2 group wherein R 2 stands for a monovalent saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group, a -COCH=CH-COOH group or its bisulphite addition product, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group or one of such groups carrying one or more substituents. The compound may be contained in a developer bath or can be added to the coating composition of a silver halide emulsion layer and/or incorporated into a waterpermeable layer which when coated under or on top of the emulsion layer forms a water-permeable system with the silver halide emulsion layer and is then in effective contact with the silver halide.
