1349299 Buffing MILL POLISHING CORP 8 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970] 51761/71 Heading B3D In buffing an outer surface of a clad aluminium sheet 19 the sheet 19 is positioned in a polishing machine 10 below a motor-driven buff 45, the buff 45 being driven at a surface speed of about 4000 ft./min. and reciprocated axially while the sheet 19 is fed below it, liquid buffing compound being supplied between the buff 45 and the sheet 19 and the total dwell time of the buff 45 on any part of the sheet 19 being limited to 6-7 seconds. The sheet 19 may be gripped by a clamp 18 on a table 11, supported by wheels 12 on rails 13 for feed movement, possibly in several passes to achieve said total dwell time overall. The buff 45, comprising a stack of cotton buff-cloth discs (65) separated by kraft paper discs (66), Figs. 3-4 (not shown), is supported on a frame 35 in turn pivoted through a hinge 36 to a base 30, the hinge 36 allowing axial reciprocation of the buff 45 through an amplitude of about one inch under the control of cam means (not shown). Fluid pressure cylinders 39 allow pivotal adjustment of the buff 45, e.g. to ensure uniform pressure on the sheet 19 as the buff 45 wears down, and the buffing liquid, e.g. a water-based compound of aluminium oxide in a tallow vehicle, is supplied through a spray head assembly 53.
