Abstract

1349394 Regenerated cellulose membrane; dialyser GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 20 Aug 1971 [18 Sept 1970] 39224/71 Heading B1X [Also in Division B5] A dialysis apparatus comprises a preswelled membrane 16 secured by an adhesive, e.g. isopropyl 2-cyanoacrylate to one side of a polyvinyl chloride frame 12. Optionally a second frame 14 can be attached to the other side of membrane 16, forming a sandwich. The membrane is made of regenerated cellulose, preferably cupramonium cellulose, preswollen with glycerin, and may be mounted on the frame before or after the swelling treatment. The glycerin is replaced by water as soon as the membrane is put to use. The membrane may be made by preswelling a dry film with water, the water then being replaced by glycerin; alternatively a ‘neverdried’ film, washed with water, may be so treated. Such films may be stored and mounted for use as dialysis membranes without any further swelling treatment, or such film may be mounted prior to storage. Fig. 3 shows a membrane mounted in a dialysis blockin an instrument adapted to analyse molecules, e.g. sugars, dialyzed from a fluid, e.g. blood, circulated on one side of the membrane into an analysis fluid circulated on the other side of the membrane.
