Abstract
1349438 Sighting levels L W HARTLEY and S HARTLEY 27 Nov 1972 [7 Dec 1971 25 May 1972] 54641/72 Heading G1F [Also in Division G2] A split field sighting level comprising a casing 10 having a light inlet opening 12 and an eye-piece 13 is provided with an inverting optical system 21 intercepting part of the light entering the opening whereby two images of an object sighted by the level are produced at the eyepiece, one of the images being upright and the other being inverted, and the level is characterized by the provision of a support structure 22 for the optical system arranged to maintain the optical system horizontal despite any tilting of the casing which may occur. As shown, the casing 10 which may be rotatably mounted on a base provided with an angularly graduated scale supports, by way of a pair of pedestals 20 extending upwardly from an annularly recessed base portion 14, a rotatably mounted pendulum 22 on which is mounted the inverting optical system 21. This system 21 may comprise a Dove prism or, in alternative embodiments, a mirror associated either with two other mirrors Fig.6 (not shown) or with a prism Fig.7 (not shown). The pendulum 22 which may be provided with an adjustable weight 26 for balancing purposes may be damped by the effects of a magnet attached to one of the pedestals 20. An observer sighting a target through the eye-piece 13 which may be of the magnifying type receives light rays which have passed through the inverting optical system as well as those which have by-passed the optical system on passing from the inlet 12 to the eyepiece 13 optionally by way of a beam splitter. The pendulum 22 may be clamped to the casing 10 when the sighting level is not in use.
