Abstract
1349444 Full face disc brakes; friction clutches BENDIX CORP 19 Feb 1973 [28 March 1972] 8089/73 Headings F2E and F2C A friction disc for a full-face mutli-disc brake or clutch comprises an annular core 58 preferably of beryllium or steel, the core having circumferentially-spaced radial slots 66 at the outer end of each of which is located, in a bore 84, a rivet 74 which secures a pair of carbon wear pads 54 in back-to-back relationship. On each face of the disc, between adjacent wear pads 54, is located an abutment member 87. Each head 76 of a rivet has a flange 88 which overlies an interior flange 92 in the opening 85 provided in the wear pad 54 for the rivet; a radial spacing A is left between the periphery of flange 88 and the edge of opening 85 so that tangential forces developed in the wear pads 54 during braking are transmitted to the abutment members 87 instead of to the rivets. The spacing A also permits movement between pad and core during differential expansion of the pad caused by heat developed during braking. Keyways 68 are provided. The disc shown is intended as a rotor for use in a known type of aircraft brake where the keyways engage keys located around the inner periphery of part of the rim of an aircraft wheel. Similar stators are engaged by keys located around a hollow torque tube secured to the fixed axle of the wheel. The discs are compressed against an outwardly-directed flange at the end of the torque tube by a circumferential array of fluid-operated pistons each separated from a common annular pressure plate by a block of heat-insulating material. The pads are moulded to shape or cut from a laminated product. The abutment members 87 may be integral with the core or spot-welded to it, and are thin to permit maximum pad wear. The slots 66 may extend from the outer periphery of the core.
