Abstract

1353723 Measuring chemiluminescence photoelectrically FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 21 Aug 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 38867/72 Heading G1A The chemiluminescence of a reaction is measured by chopping the radiation before applying it to a detector to provide an alternating signal. As shown, Fig. 1 a reaction chamber 18 having a transparent window 12 is provided with inlets 20 for the sample and reactant and an opening 22 in a baffle 16 leading to an exhaust port 24. A four bladed fan-like chopper 42 is rotated in front of the chamber by a motor 38 and the chopped radiation is detected by a silicon photo-diode 26 and the resulting A. C. signal amplified and synchronously detected using a reference generated by a sensor 48. The front of the photo-diode is provided with a transparent conductive coating 44 (e. g. of tin oxide) which is connected to the chopper blades 42 to prevent capacitative effects between the blades and the cell. Alternatively a similarly connected transparent conductive member may be mounted between the blades and the photo-cell. The sides of the blades facing the photo-cell are painted black.
