Abstract
1354641 Electrostatic separators PETROLITE CORP 12 June 1972 [19 July 1971] 27438/72 Heading B2J An electric treater for the resolution of emulsions comprises a vessel 11 with electrodes 13, 24; an entrance bushing 37 connecting an external high-voltage supply source, e.g. a transformer 36, to a conductor 38 associated with the electrode 24; and a conduit 39 leading from the bushing 37 to the interior of the vessel 11, the conduit including an upwardly extending portion 56 adjacent the vessel 11, an intermediate bight portion 57, and a downwardly extending portion 58 associated with a heat exchanger 59. In operation, the emulsion to be treated, e.g. a continuous phase of crude oil with an aqueous dispersed phase, is at a high temperature such as 350F but the provision of the bight 57 results in the creation of a thermal dam which prevents this hot liquid mixing with the cooler liquid, having a temperature about 100F, in the portion 58 of the conduit 39. The bushing 37 can thus function in a favourable temperature environment, conducive to a longer life. The conduit may include a further bight portion intermediate the bight 57 and the entrance bushing 37; further, the conductor 38 may be mounted in counterweighted contilever fashion from a support within the vessel 11 so that none of its weight is taken by the bushing 37 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown).
