Abstract
1358073 Minimising fires in fuel tanks C CHITI 9 June 1971 [6 Aug 1970 17 Feb 1971] 19623/71 Heading A5A [Also in Division B7] A fuel tank for a vehicle to reduce fire risk on collision comprises first and second sets of chambers, the chambers of each set communicating with one another but being sealed from the chambers of the other set. One set of chambers is provided with means enabling it to be filled with fuel and the other set is provided with means enabling it to be filled with a fluid which, when mixed with the fuel, makes the fuel non-flammable. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) an outer vessel 11 contains a stack of corrugated sheets with the corrugations running alternately cross-wise and separated by sheets 13. The spaces 14 thus formed contain, in use, fuel and the spaces 15 contain the other fluid e.g. a halogen. Duct 18 communicates with fuel spaces 14 and the duct 20 communicates with the other spaces 15, both ducts having pumps 19, 21 to remove the respective contents in a constant ratio. Tubes 23 and 22 are for venting, while 16 and 17 are inlets for fuel and for the other fluid respectively. In a modification the fuel and fluid chambers are formed by a spaced array of generally square-section ducts each containing a concentrically placed pipe. (Fig. 3, not shown). The tank may comprise an array of pairs of preformed sheets which together define two sets of spaces, connected together respectively, for containing fuel and the other fluid.
