Abstract

1360377 Testing pipe-lines for leaks. Determination of hydrogen in a fluid stream WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 20 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 13315/73 Headings G1B and G1S A gas or liquid sodium flowing in a pipe 31, Fig. 1, may be by-passed through pipes 30, 33 to a reinforced closed ended tubular and readily chargeable membrane 10 connected by valves to an ion pump 20, a high-pressure ionization gauge 22, a vacuum pump 21 and a supply 25 of argon. The housing 11 also contains a temperature sensor 35 connected to a temperature controller 37, and heaters 40, 42 are provided. The membrane 10 of say nickel stainless steel or an alloy has external circular strengthening rings as shown or other reinforcement such as spiral or longitudinal ribbing, see Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (not shown) and in operation is evacuated by the pump 21 and then connected only to the conduit 31 and the ion pump 20 so that any hydrogen (H) in the sodium or other tracer in the gas may be detected and measured on a current indicator 45. The current indication may be used to control the H concentration if desired. When the membrane is disconnected to be changed a heating coil 42 is energized to raise the temperature of the sodium in the housing 11 above its melting point and argon flows from 25 to atmosphere through the disconnected pipe 14 and protects a quantity of sodium contained between 11 and 14 in a solidified state which naturally forms and isolates the membrane 10 from the outside environment. In a modification, the hydrogen is required to diffuse out of the sodium and through an isolating intermediate layer of gas such as argon and then through the membrane 10. A high-pressure ionization gauge 22 may be used to check the contamination of and calibrate the membrane 10 and also detect malfunctions of the ion pump 20. The apparatus may also be used to detect water leaking into the fluid in pipe 31 if it has means for detecting both H and O concentration and combining the detecting signals.
