Abstract

1360502 Colour television AGFA-GEVAERT AG 19 July 1971 [18 July 1970] 33851/71 Heading H4F A film 4 is scanned by a flying-spot scanner 1, the transmitted beam being drawn out by lens 5 into a line 6 which is projected on to red, green and blue strip filters 7, 8 and 9, the red and blue strip filters, 7, 9 carrying gratings of opaque lines which cause the transmitted light to have different carrier frequencies which can be separated from the output of a photomultiplier 10 by frequency filters. The different carrier frequencies are in a non-integral ratio with each other. The three strip filters 78 and 9 may be replaced by nine strip filters in a recurring sequence (Fig. 3, not shown), the length of the scanning line 6 then being equal to three strip filter widths. Alternatively lens 5 may be replaced by beam-splitting means/prisms or semisilvered mirrors) to produce three beams, one for each strip filter 7, 8, 9 (Fig. 4, not shown). Two photomultipliers may be used, one (13, Fig. 5, not shown) for green light and one (14) for red and blue light. In a further embodiment the carrier frequencies are imparted to the light before it passes through the film 4 in which case the scanner screen la has three portions covered with red, green and blue filters, the red and blue filters having line gratings printed on them (Fig. 6, not shown). The three portions may be line-scanned simultaneously, the resulting beams being combined and passed to film 4, the film movement producing the frame scan, or a single cathode-beam may be alternated between the three filter areas at a high frequency so as to produce three line scans almost simultaneously. The carrier frequencies may be imparted by electronic means rather than gratings, and the light output of scanner 1 may be non-white, while still containing a proportion of each of the primary colours.
