Abstract
1360542 Tyre changing apparatus ROYAL INDUSTRIES Inc 31 Jan 1972 [10 March 1971] 4419/72 Heading B7C A tyre changing apparatus comprises a platform 11 for receiving a tyred wheel in the manner shown in Fig. 2; fixed and movable wheel gripping means, e.g. a pair of spaced fixed chucks 13 and a movable chuck 14, for releasably securing the wheel on the platform; means for moving the movable wheel gripping means towards and away from the fixed means; a first bead breaker 25U mounted on a support 27 for manual movement from a storage position on the support to a position at the rim flange of the wheel remote from the platform 11; a second bead breaker 25L projecting from the platform; means, e.g. a piston-cylinder device 26, for moving the breaker 25L to break the adjacent bead of the tyre; a rotary shaft 16 for receiving a tyre lever; an actuator 17 for rotating the shaft 16; and means for moving the shaft 16 and actuator 17 towards and away from the fixed wheel gripping means such that, in use, the shaft can be positioned centrally of the central aperture in the wheel. In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 2 and 7, the chuck 14, shaft 16 and actuator 17 are movable in unison away from the chucks 13 against the action of a return spring 22 by the same means, a piston-cylinder device 21, the chuck and shaft moving in respective slots 14a, 15 in the platform. The chuck 14 is carried on one end of an arm 18 pivoted at its other end to the base of a frame 10 supporting the platfom and the actuator 17 is secured both to the apex of a V-shaped member 19 pivoted on the frame base and to a carrier 22A secured to bolts 24L, 24U slidable in respective slots in the platform 11. The bead breaker 25U is stored on the support 27 in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and is manually moved from this position by means of a handle 30. The support 27 is connected as shown in Fig. 2, through a system of levers 32, 35, 37 and springs 28, 29, to the platform 11, frame 10, bead breaker 25L, and device 26, such that, in use, when the bead breaker 25U is positioned at the rim flange of the wheel remote from the platform, actuation of the device 26 to move the bead breaker 25L upwardly simultaneously causes the bead breaker 25U to be moved downwardly whereby the tyre is squeezed between the bead breakers. A stop 25S is provided to limit the travel of the bead breaker 25U, and a latch 40 and a cooperating latch deflector 41, with an operating handle 42, are provided which may be used to limit the travel of the bead breaker 25L.
