Abstract

1360689 Polystyrene/polyisobutylene copolymers BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 7 Nov 1972 [16 Nov 1971] 53079/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] Graft copolymers are formed by reacting polystyrene of M.W. 50,000-1,000,000 with polyisobutylene of M.W. 750-1,000,000 in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g. AlCl 3 , BF 3 or SnCl 4 . A nitro compound may also be present, e.g. nitropropane or nitrobenzene, and the reaction is suitably effected in solution, preferably in a chlorinated hydrocarbon, e.g. 1,2 – dichloroethane and/or trichloroethylene. The products have polyisobutylene groups attached to the polystyrene backbone-it is believed to the benzene nuclei. Use.-V.I. improvers for lubricating oils.
