Abstract

1363063 Enhanced evaporation of liquids; desalination of water H H SEPHTON 6 July 1971 [6 July 1970] 31746/71 Heading BIB Liquid is evaporated from a solution, e.g. sea water, by adding a foaming agent (surfactant) to it, feeding the treated solution, with reduction of pressure, into a heated flow channel so that foaming solution flows through the channel. The surfactant, which is added in relatively small amount, e.g. 50 ppm, may be anionic, cationic or non-ionic. Representative surfactants are sodium oleate, guanidine and polyethylene glycol. Graphite, powered metals and clays may also be used. The evaporator shown comprises vertical tubes 22 in a jacket 23 which is supplied with steam through inlet 24. The treated solution is fed through conduit 28 into vessel 29 whence it passes with pressure-drop through holes or nozzles in plate 30 so that foaming solution is distributed to the lower ends of tubes 22. Owing to vaporization, the solution sweeps up the tubes, for instance as rising films. The vapour is disengaged from the residual solution in vessel 33, and is withdrawn through outlet 34. Two or more evaporators may be operated in multiple-effect, the first effect being supplied with steam or with compressed process vapour. Metal evaporator tubes having a double-fluted or spiral-corrugated wall surface are advantageously used. A falling-film type evaporator comprising vertical tubes with helical inserts may also be employed to evaporate the foaming solution. Alternatively, the solution may be sprayed over horizontal tubes or passed through a platetype evaporator. The foaming process may be utilized in generating steam, e.g. in a nuclear reactor.
