Abstract

1363273 Raising liquids by suction MEDICAL DEVELOPMENT CORP 21 July 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 34293/71 Heading F1R [Also in Division A5] A fluid-collection receptacle 10, Fig. 1, comprises a substantially tubular body 11 closed at one end, which end includes at least two ports 14 to 16, each of which comprises a tubular conduit integral with and extending on both sides of the closed end, one for providing a vacuum in the receptacle and another to allow fluid flow thereinto, and a closure member 20 sealingly attachable to the open end. To prevent the fluid drained into the receptacle from being sucked out through the suction port 14, a valve (26), Fig. 2 (not shown) in the form of a porous plug is provided within the port 14, the porosity of the plug being such as to allow only the passage of air therethrough. The base of the tubular body 11 has an annular bead 18, Fig. 4B, around the periphery thereof, the bead 18 co-operating with a groove (19), Fig. 4A (not shown) in the closure member 20, and an upstanding annular ridge 23 provided on the upper surface of the member 20 sealingly engages the inner surface of the body 11. The closure member 20 is preferably of medium density polyethylene, and when a vacuum is applied a substantially flat central portion 21 of the closure member is drawn inwardly relative to the body 11 to improve the seal between the ridge 23 and the inner surface of the body 11. The body 11 is formed of acrylic polystyrene by injection moulding, Fig. 5 (not shown). Pins (35, 36) provided on the positive mould for forming the apertures of the ports also serve to align the positive and negative moulds to ensure uniformity of wall thickness of the body 11.
