Abstract
1365938 Pressure die casting machines SOAG MACHINERY Ltd 13 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 48387/71 Heading B3F A low pressure die casting apparatus having a die 5 mounted over a furnace 9 for molten metal, and a riser tube 11 extending from within the furnace to an orifice 7 leading to the die cavity, is provided with means for introducing an inert gas into said tube 11 near the upper end thereof. The tube 11 is urged upwards by two wedge assemblies 18 so that a cap 15 at the end of the tube 11 is pressed against the orifice 7. An inert gas heavier than air is introduced into the tube 11 through an inlet 19 and the furnace 9 pressurized to force the molten metal up the tube 11 into the die cavity. The inert gas is pushed into the cavity ahead of the metal and flushes out the air contained therein, vents 6 being provided in the mating surfaces of the top and bottom halves of the die. As the metal level in the tube 11 passes a nozzle 21 in the cap 15, a back pressure is produced in the cavity formed between the internal wall of the cap 15 and the outer wall of the nozzle which prevents ingress of molten metal into the inlet 19 and may be used to shut off or reduce the flow of inert gas through the inlet 19. After the metal in the die has solidified, the furnace 9 is vented to permit the excess molten metal in the tube 11 to fall back into the furnace. As the molten metal clears the lower end of the nozzle 21 the back pressure exerted on the inert gas is removed and the flow of said gas restored immediately to prevent ingress of air into the tube 11 on opening the die.
