Abstract

1368326 Magnetic measuring apparatus HOESCH A G 13 Dec 1971 [16 Jan 1971] 57691/71 Heading G1N In a measuring device for detecting the eccentricity of coated ferromagnetic rods or wires 3 within their coating 4 a magnetic flux passing into, along and out of the wire or rod 3 is divided into partial fluxes by at least three pole shoes 7 spaced circumferentially round the rod or wire 3 and individually measured at the foci 6. In the device shown in the figure the device is positioned round an extrusion nozzle 2 and includes an axially magnetized ring magnet 4, and four pole shoes 7 are spaced 90 degrees apart round the nozzle. As the coated rod is extruded through nozzle 2 magnetic flux flows from magnet 4 through disc shaped pole shoe 9, nozzle 2, rod 3, pole pieces 7 and ring shoe 8 back to the magnet 4. Flux measuring elements such as semi-conductors, resistors Hall effect devices or coils are positioned at respective foci 6 and the difference between two opposite partial fluxes is a measure of the eccentricity of the axis of the core 3 in relation to the axis of nozzle 2. To achieve this the diametrically opposite pairs of measuring elements are connected in two bridge circuits Fig.4 (not shown) one bridge measuring the X direction and the other the Y direction. The bridge outputs may be supplied to a CRT and to a switch which adds the signals vectorially and produces an output corresponding to total eccentricity which may be recorded on a pen recorder. The ring magnet 4 may be replaced by a radially magnetized ring or a coil and the extrusion nozzle may be replaced by a ferromagnetic ring. The invention may be associated with pneumatic, optical or mechanical measuring devices located to operate in the same or substantially the same plane as that in which the magnetic measurement is made and arranged to measure the eccentricity of the coating 4.
