Abstract
1368413 Electro-chemical analysis BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc 30 April 1973 [19 June 1972] 20361/73 Heading G1N An internal half cell for use in a reference or indicating electrode includes a conductor 36 sealed by plastics layer 47 in a plastics shrink tube, i.e. a tube made of a plastics material which shrinks on the application of heat, a porous plug 48 and a mixture 50 of a metal and a sparingly soluble salt thereof. A noble metal wire 36, such as palladium or silver, formed with a series of bends at 40 is first inserted in a plastics tube 30 made up of an outer layer 34 of shrink material (polyolefines, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride) and an inner layer of a plastic having a lower melting point. Heat and pressure is then applied at the region 40 so that shrink layer 34 contracts, layer 32 melts and the wire is sealed into the tube to close it. After packing a mixture 50 of Ag/AgCl or Hg/HgCl into the tube and inserting a porous plug 48 of cotton or ceramic heat is applied to the end 46 of the tube to cause the outer layer 34 to contract and compress and hold plug 48 in position. Instead of using a two layer tube 30 the conductor 36 may be coated at the region 50 with a low melting point plastics and only a shrink layer tube is provided. After charging the cell with KCl it may be mounted in a salt bridge tube, Fig. 1 (not shown), provided at its bottom with a liquid junction. Alternatively the tube may be of plastics material with its bottom in the form of a thin ionpermeable wall. The tube may be of glass.
