Abstract
1371109 Automatic tension control BELL & HOWELL CO 23 Nov 1971 [15 April 1971] 54264/71 Heading G3R In apparatus using information recording tape located in a tape containing means, tape is withdrawn from the tape containing means, formed into a loop and placed in driving engagement with a capstan, the tension in the tape loop being retroactively controlled. In an embodiment, tension of magnetic tape from a cassette is equalized on both sides of a capstan by a closed-loop tension control for each side which control motors driving respective tape spools. The tension in tape portion 33 on one side of capstan 24 is measured by feeler 60 to provide an actual tension signal from strain gauges 61, 62, which is compared in an operational amplifier 43 with a tension reference from a potentiometer 54, that is across a regulated supply 55, to provide a tension error signal which controls motor 71, driving spool 20, through a power amplifier 68 which includes transistors 73, 78. The closed loop bandwidth and stability are increased by an integrating capacitor 210 across amplifier 43, by providing a bias signal to the power amplifier via switch 96 and variable resistor 98, and by capacitor 93 and RC network 94 in the power amplifier 68, which includes a speed feedback path 91. To reduce tension in the tape whilst it is withdrawn from, or returned to, the cassette 13 i.e. when the control system is open loop, a switch 89 opens to add resistance 300 to the spool drive motor circuit. This motor is stopped by closing switch 92, thus grounding the input to the power amplifier. The tension in tape portion 34 is similarly controlled through amplifier 48, power amplifier 168 and motor 171. Motors 71, 171 and capstan motor 24, which is controlled through variable resistor 201 and reversing switch 200, may be of permanent magnet type. The tape may be withdrawn from, or replaced into, the cassette, and positioned around capstan 24 by apparatus as disclosed in Specification 1370156
