Abstract
1374418 Fire alarms EMI Ltd 12 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 54929/70 Heading G4N [Also in Division A5] A fire detection system comprises at least three fire detectors for producing output signals in response to phenomena occurring in the case of fire and means for producing an alarm signal in response to an output signal from a first of said detectors and in response to a combined output from two others of said detectors. The detectors are mounted in a head 3 on a telescopic mast 2 supported by a portable control unit 1. The first detector 11 is responsive to a temperature rise above 90‹ C. whilst the other two detectors 9, 10 are respectively responsive to smoke and to temperature above 58‹ C. The detectors 9 … 11 and associated transistors 12 … 14 are mounted in the head 3 and connected by a convoluted cable 24 to the control unit 1. In the event of an output from detectors 9 or 10 alone, a signal of + 9À6 V is fed to transistor 31, the output of which is then sufficient to operate a threshold circuit B which turns on a 1Hz multivibrator 35 so as to provide intermittent operation of a relay 37 and audible alarm 38. Relay 37 provides flashing of lamps 4a, 4b and 5a, 5b mounted on the head 3. A combined response from detectors 9, 10, or a response from the high temperature detector 11 results in a signal of + 13À2V being fed to transistor 31 which signal also operates threshold unit C which overrides the output from the multivibrator 39 and gives continuous operation of the alarm 38 and lamps 4a … 5b. Fire extinguishing.-A signal on line 43 opens a valve 7 which releases BCF extinguishant from a container 6. A switch 44 is also opened so as to allow operation of a 10 kHz unijunction transistor oscillator 45 to feed signals along line 32 to a remote alarm. Fault detection.-A line-terminating transistor 26 is included in the head 3 which normally maintains + 6V at the base of transistor 31. In the event of this voltage becoming reduced, a threshold unit D is operated which turns on a multivibrator 41, giving intermittent operation of an alarm 42 and continuous operation of a lamp 4c. Undesired release of extinguishant will open switch 44, operate a lamp 4d and an audible alarm.
