1374952 Compression moulding borders BELGONUCLEAIRE SA and CENTRE D’ ETUDE DE L’ENERGIE NUCLEAIRE 9 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 11598/73 Heading B5A To compensate for the variation in shrinkage along the length of a compression-moulded nuclear fuel pellet when the pellet is sintered, the pellet is moulded in press comprising a punch 23 movable upwards into a circular cross-section chamber 21 which is tapered at 6′ to 1 30′ so that it has a larger cross-section at its upper end 22. The taper extends the full length of the chamber, or as shown only where the pellet is formed. The punch 23 is tungsten carbide tipped and works against a fixed punch 22. The chamber walls are lubricated by compressing polystyrene balls containing zinc stearate in the chamber.
