Abstract

1375360 Laminates THOMAS DE LA RUE INTERNATIONAL Ltd 22 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 61710/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B6 and D2] A sheet material comprises two or more superimposed coloured light-transmitting non-fibrous organic polymer layers, at least two of which are differently coloured, and between each adjacent pair of layers and in substantially intimate contact therewith a partially-light transmitting layer, the colours of the light-transmitting layers being so selected and the layers being so positioned that when a face of the sheet material is observed by light from a source of substantially white light, the colour of at least a portion of that face when observed by light transmitted through the material is different from that when the same portion of the face is observed by light reflected therefrom. The light-transmitting layers which may have a thickness of 0À0001- 0À1 inch and which may be continuous or non- continuous, may be of thermoplastic or thermosetting resins, regenerated cellulose or cellulose esters and may be applied to the partially lighttransmitting layers by coating or printing or bonded by means of adhesives. The partially light-transmitting layer may be of fibrillated plastics material, tissue or alpha cellulose paper, particulate material, transparent material printed with an ink, adhesive material or textile fabric. Parts of the partially light-transmitting layer, e.g. in the form of letters, may be stamped out, transparentized, rendered opaque or printed. The external surfaces of the lighttransmitting layers may be decorated. The sheet material, preferably in perforated form, may be incorporated into paper during the production thereof by laying the sheet material on a layer of pulp in the paper-making machine and covering it with a further layer of paper pulp, the paper so produced preferably having a layer of paper fibres at least 0À0005 inch overlying each surface of the sheet material and the surface of the paper optionally being printed or subjected to transparentization. In the examples differently coloured films of polyethylene terephthalate or regenerated cellulose and intermediate layers of alpha cellulose paper or tissue paper, which may be perforated, are bonded together using a polyester-isocyanate or nitrile rubber adhesive, suitably in a hot-nip laminator.
