Abstract
1375828 Dynamometer REDMAN HEENAN FROUDE Ltd N McLEAN D B LEWIS and R J L McLAREN 18 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 56410/70 Heading G1W [Also in Division G3] The speed, acceleration or torque of a hydrobinetic device such as a dynamometer, brake or torque converter is retroactively controlled by adjusting a valve in the inlet or outlet of the device. The valve passage construction is such that the displacement of a valve element is linearly related to the torque developed by the device. In the system shown, a dynamometer 1 has an inlet 2 and outlet 3, each provided with a butterfly-type valve 4 pressure-balanced on a shaft 5. The valve element 4 may be in the form of a plate, ball, disc or other suitable shape, and the passage 2 is correspondingly shaped to give the required displacement – torque relationship, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown). Control may be effected through either the inlet or outlet valve construction, or both simultaneously. In operation, a device 9, which may be a tachogenerator, frequency pickup or torque transducer, produces a voltage corresponding to a parameter to be controlled. This voltage is compared in a variable gain amplifier 12 with a desired value represented by a potentiometer setting 11. The resulting error signal is fed to a servosystem 14 including an actuator 8 which drives the valve shaft 5. The actuator 8 may comprise a printed circuit, linear or other electric motor, or a servo-operated hydraulic or pneumatic device, and also drives a potentiometer 17 to provide position feedback on a line 18, and a transducer 20 which supplies a signal on line 19 indicative of the acceleration of the shaft 5. The actuator 8 is driven by a control amplifier 15 through an output stage 16. The system may form part of an engine test plant, and the setting of potentiometer 11 may be constant or varied in accordance with a program. Sequence control involving combinations of speed, acceleration and torque may be employed.
