Abstract

1377902 Cathode for cell with organic electrolyte P R MALLORY & CO Inc 15 March 1973 [29 March 1972] 12629/73 Heading H1B The cathode is selected from the phosphates and arsenates of Cu, Ag, Fe, Co, Ni, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi and mixtures thereof. The anode is selected from Li, Na, K, Be, Ca, Mg, Al, Rb, Cs, Ba and Sr and alloys thereof. Preferably, the anode surface is amalgamated. The electrolyte comprises a polar organic solvent having dissolved therein an ion-forming metallic salt. In the cell of Fig. 1, the cathode mix 12 comprises a compressed and bonded mixture of the selected phosphate or arsenate, graphite and P.T.F.E. The separator 14 is of fibre glass, the anode 22 is of lithium and the electrolyte is absorbed in a body 24 of cotton. The electrolyte comprises lithium perchlorate dissolved in propylene carbonate. A stainless steel container 10 is sealed by a grommet 20 to a double cover 16, 18 of stainless steel. In the cell of Figs. 4, 5, the cathode 50 includes a nickel current-collector screen covered on both sides with the cathode mix and having a tab 55. A layer of filter paper 62 is interposed between the cathode 50 and a pair of anodes 60 formed by pressing two lithium sheets on to a stainless steel screen having a tab 65. An enclosure 67 of a polymer and foil-laminate film is sealed at 68, 69 after filling with a solution of LiClO 4 in tetrahydrofuran.
