Abstract
1377989 Production of hydrocarbon resins NIPPON OIL CO Ltd 17 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 58868/71 Heading C3P A process for producing a hydrocarbon resin comprises thermally polymerizing cyclopentadiene, methylcyclopentadiene or a Diels Alder oligomer thereof with one or more unsaturated aromatic hydrocarbons at 200‹ to 350‹ C. in the presence of a controlled amount of an inert hydrocarbon solvent which dissolves the monomer charge. The aromatic hydrocarbon is preferably styrene, a methyl styrene and/or vinyl toluene although indene, and cracked oil fractions containing a major proportion of such aromatic compounds, may be used. The cyclopentadiene (or its derivatives specified) may also be in the form of, for example, a dimerized C 5 fraction, which has been obtained by the cracking of naphtha. The preferred monomer concentration is 10-95% by wt. Solvents specified are benzene, toluene, xylene, hexane, iso-octane, mineral spirit, solvent naphtha and kerosene. The solvent enables polymers of varying softening points to be obtained, the softening point depending upon the amount of solvent used-the more solvent the lower the softening point. In the examples, the following specified monomers were polymerized in the following specified solvents: (1) DCPD/styrene, in xylene; (2) DCPD/o-, m-, p-vinyl toluene mixture, in toluene; (3) DCPD/cracked oil C 9 fraction (includes the solvent); (4) a dimerized C 5 fraction obtained from cracked naphtha/ styrene, in xylene; (5) methyl-cyclopentadiene/ styrene, in solvent naphtha, and (6) cyclopentadiene/styrene, in iso-octane. (DCPD is dicyclopentadiene.)
