Abstract

1383266 Marine propulsion MANNESMANN-MEER AG 19 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 8023/73 Heading B7V [Also in Division F2] A ship’s main engine 1 normally drives a propeller shaft 4 through a main gear system 3 and drives an electrical generator 12 through the constant speed output shaft 13 of an auxiliary gearing system 8. The shaft 13 achieves constant speed only over a particular range of main engine speeds, and if the main engine speed falls outside this range a clutch 6 is disengaged and an auxiliary engine 11 is used to drive the generator 12. If the main engine fails, the auxiliary engine 11 can drive the propeller shaft 4 through the gear systems 8 and 3; in this ease the current supply to the ship is provided by an emergency power facility. When the ship is in harbour the generator 12 is driven by the auxiliary engine 11.
