Abstract

1383493 Heat exchangers ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 3 May 1972 [10 Feb 1971] 4403/71 Heading F4S In a heat exchanger, e.g. a radiator, comprising a pair of spaced manifold tubes 12 interconnected by a plurality of side-by-side aluminium foil tubular passage elements 10 spaced apart by flanged tubular members 13, a pair of generally flat annular devices 19 of spring steel surround the ends of each manifold tube 12 and abut the ends of the assembly of tubular elements 10 and members 13 via edge stiffening members 14, 14A. Each device 19 has projecting teeth or serrated portions 20 which resiliently engage with the manifold tube and act to resist bursting forces applied to the assembly due for example to liquid at high pressure within the manifold tubes 12 and tubular passage elements 10. The component parts of the heat exchange assembly, including corrugated fins 21 extending between adjacent elements 10, are bonded together by a synthetic resin adhesive. In alternative embodiments the inner periphery of each spring steel device 19 is divided into a smaller number of teeth or sectors (see Figs. 4-6, not shown).
