Abstract
1383682 Lasers ELTRO GmbH 6 Oct 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 46213/72 Heading H1C To suppress incoherent radiation from a laser amplifier comprising an optically-pumped bundle of fibres 1, Fig. 1, which may be randomly disposed, a spatial frequency filter 6 adapted to the spatial fibre distribution of the bundle is located in the focal plane of an associated objective lens 5. Preferably the ends 2, 3 of the fibre bundle are curved. A lens system 8 is located at the focal plane to couple the amplified radiation to the objective lens 5. A similar lens arrangement 4, 7 is provided for input radiation. The bundle of fibres is cooled by a fluid medium passed through ducts 9, 10, and the use of an ionizable gas passed through the fibre bundle for pumping purposes is mentioned. In a modification, Fig. 2, the fibre bundle and its optical system is located in a resonator consisting of a totally reflecting mirror 13 and a partially reflecting mirror 11, the amplified radiation being extracted by an inclined partially transmitting mirror 12. The use of a diffraction grating at the focal plane of the curved input end 2 of the fibre bundle is mentioned, the grating interval corresponding to that of the fibres. Each fibre has a graded refractive index across its section.
