Abstract
1389451 Treating tobacco HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 27 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971 29 June 1971] 3931/72 Heading F4G Tobacco is treated in a first section 2 by passing a first air stream through the tobacco leaving the section 2 and then through the tobacco entering-the section 2, and in a second section 3 by passing air firstly through the tobacco entering the section 3 and then through tobacco leaving the section 3. Tobacco is conveyed through the first section 2 by air- .permeable vibrating conveyers 7, 8, 9 (or belt or rotary drum conveyers), and heated air is supplied to the section 2 by a fan 38 and exits at 44. The tobacco may be fluidized by the vibration and air streams. Tobacco is conveyed through the chambers 11, 12, 13 of the second section 3 by the conveyer 9, and heated air is supplied to the first chamber 11 by a fan 54, passes via conduits 57, 58 to the chambers 12, 13 and exits at 59. The air entering at 44 passes through a conduit 43 to a fan 77 which delivers it to a third section 4, temperature and moisture sensors 84, 86 controlling a heater 94 and a water injector 98 so that the air is at a pre-set temperature and moisture content in order that the air is substantially in hygroscopic equilibrium with the tobacco. The moisture content of the tobacco is detected at 99 and compared with a reference value at 71 to control a mixture shutter 67 adjusting the ratio of heated air and ambient air supplied by the fan 54 to the first chamber 11. In a modification, the moisture content of the tobacco is measured before it enters the first section 2 and compared with a reference value to control a mixture shutter (like shutter 67), in the duct 41 of the fan 38. The tobacco is supplied at a constant rate to the first section 2 via a weighing conveyer. In a further modification, the moisture content of the tobacco is measured following the second section 3 and before the third section 4 and compared with a reference value to control the mixture shutter 67.
