Abstract

1395380 Control of D.C. motors LINDE AG 4 Aug 1972 [6 Aug 1971] 36465/72 Heading H2J A vehicle has two D.C. motors 17, 19 driving wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle, which are connected in parallel across a D.C. source 1, 2 and which are controlled by respective pulse control circuits 32, 34. Motor 17 has field windings 10, 11, one for each direction of rotation, and when the vehicle is cornering with the wheel coupled to motor 17 on the inside of the curve and a predetermined steering deflection is exceeded, a switch 8 or 9, in series with the live field winding, opens. A signal from a measuring resistor 40 has a magnitude and sign dependent upon the difference between the loads of motors 17, 19 and is used to control the circuits 32, 34 via a common control system including amplifier 42. Thereby a reduction in the pulse frequency or duration of energizing pulses to the motor on the inside of the curve, is effected without overloading either motor. A measuring resistor 41 also feeds a signal to amplifier 42. Armature diodes 22, 23 and freewheel diodes 24 are also provided. In two other embodiments (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) one common pulse control system (4) controls both motors. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the measuring resistor 40 of Fig. 3 is omitted the measuring resistor (21) feeding control signals to the common pulse control system (4). In the embodiment of Fig. 2 the measuring resistor 40 of Fig. 3 is replaced by two switches (28, 29) connected in series between points 16, 18, and a common armature diode (30) is connected to the line between the switches. When switch 8 or 9 opens the switch (28) adjacent motor 17 also opens to prevent current flowing through that motor’s armature. The other switch (29) is similarly gauged to switches 12, 13.
