Abstract
1395685 Lead-acid battery plates NL INDUSTRIES Inc 10 May 1973 [10 May 1972 13 Feb 1973] 22454/73 Heading H1B The positive and negative electrodes of a leadacid battery each consist of a three-ply laminate, the centre ply 11 being of conductive material and the outer plies 13, 14 comprising a homogeneous mixture of fibres and active powder comprising lead or a lead composition, 90- 100% of the fibres being of synthetic plastics material, the remainder, if any, being natural fibres. The three plies are bonded together by heat and pressure. As shown, the centre ply 11 has a terminal tab 15 and comprises a sheet of lead foil having perforations 15. Alternatively, the centre ply may comprise conductive paper containing particles of lead or graphite. Preferred synthetic fibres are of polyethylene or polypropylene. The natural fibres, if present, may be of soft wood. The active powder may be Pb, PbO, tribasic lead sulphate or tetrabasic lead sulphate. In one method of making the outer plies 13, 14 the fibres are agitated in water to form a slurry to which the active powder of lead oxide is added-preferably for each part by weight of fibres there are 50-99 parts of active powder. A flocculating agent is added and the pH of the slurry is then lowered by adding papermaker’s grade alum solution to form a large flocculated mass. This mass is filtered and collected on a screw to form a composite sheet of a loose homogeneous mat of fibres coated with lead oxide powder. This mat is dried and the three-ply electrode is made by placing the mat on both sides of a perforated lead sheet and compressing the structure at a pressure of 1200 lbs/ sq. inch at a temperature of 165‹ C. for 10 minutes. A battery including seven electrodes is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown).
