Abstract
1395816 Treating metals against corrosion M B PERLMAN 10 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 21876/72 Heading B2E A process of treating ferrous metal e.g. rolled mild steel, Zn, Al, Cu or Ag to improve their resistance to chemical attack, comprises bringing the surfaces into contact with an acidic composition consisting of a colloidal dispersion of silica and a water soluble sugar and removing the metal surface from contact with the composition before any visible SiO 2 deposit is formed. The composition may include 0.0004% SiO 2 and a surfactant e.g. saponin. The treated surface may be painted with oil-modified alkyd, or electrodeposited with brass, Cd or Cr, and the treatment may be carried out after painting or plating to treat remaining exposed metal surface. The sugar may be glucose or fructose derived from beet sugar or blackstrap molasses. The composition may also include, in solution, gallic, succinic, aspartic, salicylic, malic or citric acids, succinamide, glycine or E.D.T.A. The preferred method of treatment is by dipping.
