Abstract
1395822 Photo-polymerizable elements UNIROYAL Inc 10 May 1972 [17 May 1971] 21823/72 Heading G2C [Also in Division C3] Photo-polymerizable elements useful in the production of relief printing plates comprise a substrate, formed of a dimensionally stable flexible material, having coated thereon a layer of a composition comprising (I) at least 40 wt per cent of a block copolymer of the formula:- A-B-A wherein the end blocks A are monovinylarene polymer blocks which may be the same or different and which have an average molecular weight of from 2,000 to 100,000 and a glass transition temperature above 25‹C, the total block A content being 10-50 wt per cent of the copolymer, and B is an elastomeric diene polymer block having an average molecular weight of from 25,000 to 1,000,000 and a glass transition temperature below 10‹C, (II) at least 5 wt per cent of a photopolymerizable monomer containing two or more (meth) acrylate ester groups per molecule; (III) 0.1 -10 wt per cent of an addition polymerization initiator activatable by actinic light and, optionally, (IV) up to 50 wt per cent of a liquid rubber polymer having a molecular weight of from 750 to 3000. Preferred components of the photo-polymerizable layer are (I) styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer; (II) ethylene glycol diacrylate or dimethacrylate, trimethlolpropane triacrylate or trimethacrylate, or pentacrythritol tetraacrylate or tetramethacrylate; (III) benzophenone; and (IV) liquid polybutadiene. The elements are polymerized by imagewise exposure to actinic radiation, e.g. mercury vapour lights, pulsed Xenon lights or carbon arc lights, and developed ultrasonically by washing out the non-exposed areas with a solvent. The elements may optionally include an anti-halation layer of C black, MnO 2 , or a dye in a binder or the above photo-polymerizable composition (of Example 1) between the support and photo-polymerizable layer.
