Abstract
1395889 Automatic control systems HOWDEN SUPERTHERM Ltd 7 June 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 56130/71 Heading G3R A control system includes a semi-conductor switch 5 whose on/off period is altered to control the power supplied to a load C wherein a control signal which is the sum of a reference signal and the error signal produced from the comparison of an actual value with the reference value is used to produce from a staircase waveform a square wave, whose mark to space ratio corresponds to the value of the control signal, which square wave controls the application of firing pulses to the semi-conductor switch. The staircase generator 3 produces a waveform having a selectable number of steps (from 2 to 15) and is synchronized with the mains supply by oscillator 1 and shaper 2. The control input (control signal) is used in generator 4 to produce the variable mark/space ratio square wave which is used to enable the firing pulse generator 6 for the period of the cycle of the staircase waveform when power is to be supplied to the load. In the embodiment shown the load C is a heater and sensor 8 produces a signal representative of the actual temperature which signal is fed, along with the reference signal, to a difference amplifier 7. The control system can also be used for the control of a three phase heating system or single, or three phase motors. In a motor application it is stated that the speed of the motor may be sensed or, if it drives a fan the air-flow from the fan may be sensed.
