Abstract

1395960 Purifying exhaust gases FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 21 Aug 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 38866/72 Heading F1B Exhaust gas purifying device comprises a housing 10 having an inlet 12 and an outlet 14, a catalyst 22 and a heat storing means 26 comprising a material 34 that absorbs sufficient heat to change its physical state at a temperature exceeding the activation temperature of the catalyst and reverses said physical change of state to transfer conductively the released latent heat to the catalyst when the catalyst temperature declines below the temperature at which the material changes its physical state. Housing 10 has double walls filled with thermal insulation 16. A flap-valve 21 prevents reverse flow. The catalyst support 22 consists of small passages 24 containing finely-divided catalyst. The heat storing means consists of a container 28 inserted into an opening in the rear end of the support and extending almost to the front of the support. A tapered extension 30 of the container projects rearwardly from the support and is exposed to the hot gas stream which leaves the passages 24. Heat transfer is enhanced by fins 33. The container is filled with zinc 34. During operation of the catalyst, the body of the container is heat by conduction and the extension 30 by convection so that the zinc melts. When the engine is stopped, heat from the container maintains the temperature of the catalyst so that it rapidly returns to operating temperature if the engine is re-started after a short period. In a first modification Fig. 2, (not shown) the single central container is replaced by several smaller containers spaced around a circle centred on the support axis. In a second modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) two containers, each frusto-conical in shape are positioned, one upstream and one downstream of the catalyst support, in the tapered ends of the housing. Fig. 4 shows a device having a tangential gas entry and a heat reflector 40 backed by thermal insulation 44. The casing 42 is corrugated to reduce convective heat losses from the interior of the housing. The casing 42 may be made small enough to enter the inlet 36 and be mounted on a reciprocable rod which also carries a plate which closes the inlet 36 when the casing 42 is moved into the inlet at the time the engine is stopped. The material 34 may also be aluminium or tin, or alloys thereof, mercury, bismuth or cadnium.
