Abstract
1402031 Non-metallic springs; spring units DUNLOP Ltd 27 April 1973 [3 May 1972] 20504/72 Heading F2S [Also in Division B7] A vehicle bumper includes a shock absorber having at least two rubber rings in compression between two coaxial cylindrical members 1, 4 and tending to roll or rotate about their circular axes when there is relative axial movement of the members 1, 4; one of the two rings, or each alternate ring, is prestressed by being rolled about its circular axis, i.e. turned inside out. To restore the relative position of the members 1, 4 after impact, there may be a helical spring 9 in the inner member 4 attached to the bumper blade. The outer cylinder 1 may be connected to the vehicle frame by an extension piece, but as shown there is a sealing plate 10 (with an air vent 11) which attaches to the frame. The crosssection of a ring may be circular or elliptical in outline. Multi-absorber units having several parallel cylinders (14), each containing a solid cylinder (15, 16 or 17) and rubber rings (6, 7), may be formed by bolting together two plates (12, 13) with coinciding semi-cylindrical grooves. Two such multiple units may attach, to a vehicle, a hollow bumper blade (19) of rubber or plastics material and filled with expanded rubber or other expanded resilient polymer.
