Abstract
1402229 Electrolytic treatment of cyanide waste MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 12 Dec 1973 [20 Dec 1972(2)] 57533/73 Heading C7B Cyanide-containing waste is purified by a combination of electrolytic oxidation and electrodialysis by passing a portion thereof serially through a cathode chamber 6 bounded by a cationexchange (CX) membrane 4, an anode chamber 5 bounded by an anion exchange (AX) membrane 3 and recirculating to storage 9; simultaneously passing another portion thereof through parallel concentration chambers 8 bounded by alternate AX and CX membranes and recirculating to storage 9; and simultaneously passing an alkali or alkaline earth metal chloride solution through parallel dilution chambers 7 bounded by alternate AX and CX membranes and recirculating to storage 10; chambers 7 and 8 and the AX and CX membranes being arranged alternately between the cathode and anode chambers with a dilution chamber being directly adjacent the cathode and anode chambers. When the CN content reaches a sufficiently low level, the metal chloride solution may be discharged, the partially purified CN waste now rich – in metal chloride transferred to storage 10 and fresh waste added at 9. In an alternative embodiment, two cells as shown in Fig. 1 are used in series, the first portion of the CN waste passing from the cathode chamber of one cell to the anode chamber of the other, and the second portion thereof and the chloride solution passing sequentially through the parallel other chambers of the two cells. In this case the electrodes of one cell are both bounded by AX membranes and of the other by CX membranes, whereby, when the CN concentration falls low enough the chloride solution may be discharged and replaced by fresh CN waste and the partially purified CN waste now rich in metal chloride becomes the new chloride solution by reversing the electric polarity of the system. The CN solution may contain K 4 (or Na 4 ) Fe(CN) 6 , K 2 Ni(CN) 4 , NaCN, or K 2 Cu(CN) 3 . The chloride may be NaCl. Treatment at 50- 100V for 1-3 hours is specified. The CN is removed from the initial solution by dialysis and is ultimately destroyed by electrolytic and chemical oxidation, the latter using electrolytically generated Cl 2 .
