Abstract
1402307 Masted fork lift attachment for cranes F D WELCH 17 Aug 1972 [26 Aug 1971 10 May 1972] 38489/72 Heading B8H A masted fork lift attachment is securable to the end of a crane boom for operation by the lift cable thereof and has a levelling arrangement whereby the mast may be adjusted to extend vertically for any inclination of the boom. The attachment comprises a frame 41 with a suspension pin 23 detachably received in a recess 77 in two plates 75 fixed to the end of the boom. The pin is locked in the recess by a rotatable latch 80 which can be locked by a spring biased catch 81. A locking pin 84 actuable by a lever 85 engages in recesses in the plates 75 to lock the frame 41 against rotation relative to the boom. A pin 73, mounted on the frame 41, pivotally supports a telescopic mast structure 30 comprising a first section 70 and a second section 89 along which a fork carriage 36 is movable under the action of the lift cable secured thereto. A latching arrangement Figs. 9-11 (not shown) is actuable by the fork carriage as it moves along the mast to suspend the second section 89 from the first section in the retracted condition of the mast and to suspend the second section from the carriage in the extended state of the mast. A pair of racks 53, with a greater lateral spacing than the frame 41, are pivoted at one end to the first section of the mast remote from its connection to the frame and is engaged by a carriage 64 with two guide rollers 58, 60 to engage respective surfaces 56, 59 on the rack, and a pinion 49 driven by a motor 39 mounted on the frame. The motor is remotely controlled to retract or extend the racks and thus pivot the mast about the frame to keep the mast vertical for different elevations of the boom. A pendulum actuated indicator 153 provides the crane operator with information regarding the inclination of the mast. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 21 (not shown), the racks are replaced by hydraulic rams acting between the frame and the mast structure 30. In operation the lift cable is passed around a pulley zone mounted on the frame 41 and the hook is secured to the boom. Retraction of the cable will then raise the attachment from the ground &c. until the pins 23 and 84 can be locked in position. The hook is then released from the boom and engages with the fork carriage for operation of the attachment.
