Abstract

1414103 Photohardenable material having reinforced photohardened layer E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 11 Jan 1974 [11 Jan 1973] 01335/74 Heading G2C A photo-sensitive element comprises a sheet of photohardenable material and a layer of photohardened said material, the layer containing continuous reinforcing material e.g. a fabric such as a marquisette fabric of stretched and heat-set polyester yarn. The open space of the weave of the fabric may be 3-20 times the closed space of the weave. The element may also comprise a removable cover sheet e.g. polyethylene terephthalate film coated on both sides with a vinylidene – chloride – alkyl acrylate – itaconic acid copolymer mixed with an alkyl acrylate and/or methacrylate polymer and on the side nearest the photohardenable material with a gelatine sub layer (see Ex I) on the side of the sheet remote from the layer and an external support film on the side of the sheet adjacent the layer. The photohardenable material may comprise (a) an organic polymer binder, (b) an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing 1-4 ethylenic groups, having a boiling point above 100‹C at normal atmospheric pressure, a molecular weight less than 1500 and capable of forming a high polymer by photoinitiated polymerization, and (c) an addition polymerization initiator activatable by actinic light. The photohardenable material may contain a polymerization inhibitor or a dye (see Ex II and IV). The photo-sensitive element may be prepared by embedding e.g. by calendering a continuous reinforcing material into a layer of a photohardenable material during or after forming the photohardenable material into a sheet and exposing the layer to actinic light to photoharden the layer while leaving the remainder of the sheet unhardened. The photohardenable material may be polyvinyl cinnamate, a polymer having chalcone and benzophenone type groups, or a combination of a polymer such as acrylic and methacrylic acid amide polymers, polymeric polyols or natural colloids with a light-sensitive cross-linking agent e.g. a metal dichromate, diazo compound or azide. In Example II the relief plate produced on exposure and development is post-exposed to further harden (polymerize) the photopolymer image and reinforced layer. Three subsequent photohardenable layers are laid on top of the photo-sensitive element of the invention and pressed at 150‹C for 1 minute at 700 kg/cm2, 1 minute at 1400 kg/cm2 and 2 minutes at 2800 kg/cm2 in Example III. This element is conditioned by holding in CO 2 for 6 days in Example III before hardening the layer containing the reinforcing material. The exposed and developed element may be used as a stereo master for moulding or printing and is tough and resists delamination.
