Abstract

1414631 Electro-phoretic phosphor deposition A W STANDAART 24 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 48881/72 Heading C7B [Also in Division H1] An electrolyte composition containing suspended phosphors, for use in a process of electrophoretic deposition of the phosphor particles on the faceplate of a colour cathode ray tube (see Division H1) comprises 1 to 10% by volume of deionized water, 90 to 99% by volume of a liquid medium selected from the C 1 to C 5 alcohols, acetone, and trichloroethylene, together with an ionizable material for importing both conductivity to the mixture, and a charge to the suspended phosphor particles to prevent flocculation. The ionizable material is preferably strontium or thorium nitrate present in an amount of 1.2 X 10-5 to 1 X 10-2mal per litre, and the phosphor may be present in an amount of 0.1 to 10 gm. per litre. The faceplate is coated with a conductive pattern defining the desired areas of phosphor deposition, and an anode is employed of silver, platinium, gold, stainless steel, carbon, or nickel, spaced 1 to 3 cm, away from the faceplate, and of area equal to or up to 5% greater than, the patterned portion of the faceplate. A preferred deposition rate, to ensure uniformity, is 0.005m.m thickness per 30 seconds at a current density of 1 milliamp per cm2.
